The story of Mrs. Belem Trading Company was inspired by the discovery of a travel diary in an antique shop in New Orleans, Louisiana. The book (diary) recounted a love story in the late 1800’s of a young woman by the name of Odile Clement from the salt marshes of Guérande in the Brittany region of France and an English merchant ship owner by the name of Paul Barrington.
During their journeys on their beloved ship, The Belem, Odile would combine the sea salt she brought with her from Guérande and all of the exotic spices and herbs she collected along their travels. She would record and illustrate theses recipes in her diary.
The passion and adventure behind this story was the driving force to create Mrs. Belem Trading Company and its recipes.
Mrs. Belem Trading Company only uses sea salt from Guérande, France. The salt that comes from this village maintains the same traditional hand-harvesting methods that have been used in the region for centurie
